TAKE THE POLAR BEAR PLUNGE AT SAN DIEGO ZOO!

WE HAVE YOUR TICKETS TO SAN DIEGO ZOO'S ALL NEW

Conrad Preby's Polar Bear Plunge is coming to San Diego Zoo on March 26, and The Beat has your free tickets to check it out!
New interactive features in Conrad Preby's Polar Plunge include:

  • Story Time - A gathering place with the silver, stylized polar bear sculptures and three oversized storybooks about polar bears mounted on stands. Guests have the opportunity to read the stories, which are written for young children and accompanied by hand-drawn illustrations.

  • Measure Up – This area showcases information about the size and habits of polar bears. Includes life-size polar bear statues and a large scale to compare human weight with bears.

  • Polar Bear Den – Includes a replica of polar bear dens. Visitors can crawl into the dens to see what it’s like inside. Adjacent to the dens is an area of replicated ice that has breathing holes in it – a seal is popping up out of one of the holes, and visitors can go underneath the ice and pop their heads up through the holes too.

  • Experience Wall – Glass viewing windows looking into the polar bear habitat. The bear comes right up to the panel only a few feet away from the visitors. You can smell the bear, hear it sniffing and snorting and making any other vocalizations.

  • Research Helicopter – Contains a real helicopter, just like the ones researchers use in the Arctic to study and track polar bears. Visitors can get into the seat of the helicopter to see all the instruments and a sample of the notes that researchers take while following bears

  • It’s Melting – Contains sculpted maps of NASA photos, one showing the sea ice cover in 1989 and the other showing the sea ice cover in 2007 – and the clear loss of sea ice that has taken place between then and now. There is also an interactive game stamped on the floor of this exhibit area, with ice floes of different sizes.

  • Carbon Graph – Shows documented CO2 levels from the past leading to the present, and the future. There is also an interactive “flip chart” that shows people what they can do to slow this process and reduce their own carbon footprint.
